A year ago today a 7.0 magnitude earthquake struck the small Caribbean nation of Haiti, killing an estimated 230,000 people, injuring 300,000 more, and leaving roughly 1,000,000 people homeless. In a matter of hours, all eyes were on this tiny country, and thousands of organizations went into action to offer aid to its people.

In a spirit of gratitude to God for being gracious to work through us, we want to update you on two ways in which DG was able to respond to this disaster.

Creole For Your Joy Project

Our International Outreach department quickly made it a priority to finish the project of translating For Your Joy into Creole. We partnered with a Haitian pastor and a Compassion International staff member and were able to complete the project in a very short amount of time. (Download For Your Joy in Creole.)

Printing 100,000 of these booklets was going to cost us $20,000, which was money we didn't have. So we posted our goal online and asked our readers to partner with us. Your response was overwhelming and we were able to print these booklets shortly after. As of last month, 99,000 of these booklets have been donated to nearly 50 organizations that are on the ground working in Haiti.

Hip Hop for Haiti

Lukas Naugle and I (along with a team of very gifted friends) put together Hip Hop for Haiti. We partnered with Reach Records and Lampmode Records to bring Lecrae, Json, Flame, DJ Essence and DJ Official to Minneapolis to perform for 1500 people at 3 Degrees. Our goal was to gather believers under the banner of gospel-centered hip hop and provide them the opportunity to bless Haiti through donating to Churches Helping Churches.

What an incredible evening of worship! By the end of the night we had raised $20,000. In the months following the earthquake, Churches Helping Churches was able to raise over 2 million dollars to aid in the rebuilding of the Haitian church. To follow their ongoing work, visit their website or follow them on Twitter.

On this anniversary, many of our friends and partners in ministry are in Haiti right now ministering to these hurting people. We must not forget that we are to consider those in need and do all that we can to care for them. Paul reminds us in Galatians 2:10 that we are to be eager to remember the poor.

Join us in praying that Jesus will continue to draw Haitian people to himself.  We praise God for providing opportunities for us to serve hurting people. Ultimately, we want to see Haitian people treasure Christ above everything—including food, clothing, shelter, and even life itself.
