Roe v. Wade: Is It Really All About Doctors' Rights?

In 2007 PBS aired a documentary profiling the history of the U.S. Supreme Court, including the Roe v. Wade ruling. Their take? Apparently the judgment was less about protecting women’s "reproductive rights" and more about protecting doctor’s rights.

I find this assertion surprising and illuminating (including the historical footage, with Walter Cronkite announcing the ground-breaking ruling on the CBS Evening News).

You’ve likely read at least one commentary regarding the 38th anniversary of Roe v. Wade. Now watch this intriguing video excerpt from The Supreme Court.

Are you a medical doctor or lawyer? Please help our readers understand. Does the assertion have merit? If so, what’s the relationship between the full-bloom women’s rights movement in 1973 and doctors' rights in the landmark decision?

Finally, please pass this post on to teens and college students interested in medicine or law. How might the gospel of Jesus Christ so shape their potential given professions for the good of society—including the unborn?

For while Roe v. Wade may claim it's protecting doctors' rights, its implications have far-reaching and ongoing tragic consequences. Presently, the ruling is less about doctors' rights than originally conceived. (But were not more than a few of us on to this truth long ago?)
