"It is better that one man should die for the people, not that the whole nation should perish." Caiaphas makes more than a mere proposal in John 11:50. John explains to the reader that these words weren't spoken on his own. No. This was prophecy. God was speaking through the counsel of Caiaphas about the death he had ordained for Jesus. Jesus would die for the nation — and more than that — he would die to "gather into one the children of God who are scattered abroad."
