Mary has just seen Jesus raise her brother, Lazarus, from the dead. She knows Jesus in his resurrecting power. She believes that he really is, as he said, "the resurrection and the life." And to express her wonder and gratitude, she pours out a very expensive ointment on Jesus' feet, wiping them with her hair.
Judas speaks up here, scoffing at Mary's affections for the greatness of Jesus. And Jesus responds to him, "Leave her alone, so that she may keep it for the day of my burial."
Now Jesus could have left it here and said nothing else. But he goes on to give three reasons why Judas should leave Mary alone. He chose to say these three reasons out load so that everybody, including us, would hear and learn and believe.
