David Platt just concluded the first session this morning at the Desiring God National Conference. Look for the video and audio available for download on Monday. Here are a few high points of his message:
There are four simple, glorious, life-altering truths in Isaiah 6:
We have an incomprehensibly glorious God.
Our God reigns. Throughout history leaders and kings have come and gone. But there is one Leader, one King, who will always be.
We are a sinfully lost people.
What does it mean to be lost? We have spurned God's authority and despised his word. Our sin before an infinitely holy God warrants infinitely horrifying judgment. Our problem was not just that we made bad decisions, but that we were lost, cut off, condemned, destined for hell.
The way we talk about hell shows that we don't really know what we're talking about. We are not playing games here. There is a real everlasting hell where all people will go if they don't trust in Jesus Christ. Beware of the things in your life that inoculate you from seeing these great realities of eternity.
We have a scandalously merciful God.
God looks at guilty sinners and says, "You are innocent." How can this be? It is a scandal. How can God in perfection look at a sinner and say perfectly righteous? Go to Isaiah 53.
How does God show both holy hatred and holy love towards sinners? The answer is the cross of Jesus Christ.
We have an indescribably urgent mission.
Here are three reasons why it's urgent we go to them:
- because there are 2.5 billion people in the world who have enough knowledge of God to damn them to hell,
- because the gospel of God is powerful enough to save them forever.
- because the glory of God is good enough to satisfy them forever.
